There was a variety of of weapons in use during the early medieval period. Below are a selection we use within the society, although new members are always started out with the staples of the times; either single handed spear and shield, or two handed spear.
Single-Handed Spear
This 6-7ft long weapon is typically dubbed the King of the Battlefield. The primary weapon of every combatant in the period. This, paired with a shield, is the starting weapon for every new combatant in the society.
Two-Handed Spear
The 2-handed spear was 9ft long, and a weapon of the upper classes, designed to provide a ranged advantage. The 9ft winged spear was originally used for hunting Boar, but like most things, also found a use in warfare.
Axe
The hand-axe was a very common sidearm on the battlefield. Quicker and cheaper to make than a sword, most people carried one of these for when the line broke down into individual melee combats. The Vikings typically used an axe called a Bearded Axe.
Sword
A sword was the typical sidearm of the upper classes. Expensive, the sword required a lot of time, skill, and resources to make, therefore only the wealthiest of people would own one.
Seaxe
The Seaxe is a large utility knife, found in ornate embosed leather sheaths edged in stamped brass. These would usually be worn in place of your sword in places were swords were not allowed. In the society, we use them as a starting sidearm.
Lang Seaxe
Meaning "Long Knife", a lang seaxe is another sidearm akin to a sword. They were more economical to make than a sword having a single edge, a long grip, allowing for use two-handed, and no fittings.
Dane Axe
Used by the upper echelon of fighters, with a full maille shirt and helmet. This weapon was used to great effect to break shieldwalls and dismount cavalry. This is a Tier 3 elite weapon within the society.
Mace
The mace was typically a weapon of the knight, used to crush bones without the worry of having to pierce the armour. This is a Tier 3 elite weapon within the society.
